Aeration, by definition, is the act in which air is mixed throughout another liquid or substance. Lawn aeration, therefore, is the mixing of air into your yard and soil to promote a healthy lawn. Here at AllGreen, we offer an array of beneficial services beyond grass cutting to keep your yard looking its best.
How do you aerate a lawn?
Aerating a lawn involves creating space for air, sunlight, and water by poking small holes – allowing these nutrients to make it all the way down to the roots. You can use either a plug or spike aerator to make these holes. Spikes resemble forks and use tines to poke holes in the ground. Plug models, however, remove a small circle of grass and soil. This is a better method of doing things because just poking holes with a tine can further compact the soil.
What benefits does it have?
Aerating your soil is similar to tilling it – it allows nutrients to reach deeper parts of the earth and make it more nutrient dense overall. This creates a better growing environment for grasses, flowers, and any other plants you’d like to have in the future.
When should you perform this service?
This doesn’t have to be done very often, but lawn aeration done on a regular basis can have drastic benefits. The best time of year to aerate is during growing season. This way, the grass can grow back and fill in any open areas after the plugs of soil are removed.
Should I Be Doing This?
Your lawn probably needs aeration if it sees heavy use. Lots of running around cause the soil to compact more quickly than it would naturally. You may also need this service if your lawn dries out quickly.
